About Spokane Spokane, founded originally as "Spokane Falls," became "Spokane" in 1891. The name is an Indian word that means "Children of the Sun", or "Sun People" and was named after Chief Illim Spokanee.
Spokane went through some bumpy times in the early 19th and 20th centuries, with a reputation for an abundance of saloons, casinos, and wild company. The area was also known as a trading hub for furs and supplies, so people came from all around to trade and buy supplies. During that time, progressive thinkers also conceived several auditoriums and theaters which made Spokane a prime location for entertainment.
Spokane's beautiful scenery and proximity to lakes, wilderness, and outdoor recreation -- in addition to mining and the railroads -- helped launch the region into economic prosperity. As a prime location with access to Seattle, Canada, Idaho, and Oregon, Spokane continues to grow while defining a technology based infrastructure and available workforce.
The city and surrounding areas have changed their wild ways since the early times, but entertainment, commerce, and prosperity are still thriving.
Spokane is an "All American City" with a reasonable cost of living, an abundance of business opportunites, and is touted as a great place to raise a family.
